Living in a Homeowners Association (HOA) can have its advantages, but when it comes to RV storage, the challenges are real. This blog post dives deep into the difficulties we faced and the solutions we found regarding RV storage. If you’re navigating similar issues or considering an RV purchase, this post provides insights and options to consider.

The HOA Dilemma

Our quest for the perfect RV storage began when we realized our HOA prohibited parking RVs at home. Initially, this was manageable as we found a storage lot just five minutes away. However, in a striking turn of events, we received a letter on May 23, giving us just 30 days to vacate the lot due to its closing. This sudden notice turned our storage situation into a frantic challenge.

Frantic Search for Alternatives

With only weeks to find storage, we immediately contacted 13 local RV and boat storage facilities. To our dismay, every facility was fully booked. Being placed on waiting lists added to our anxiety and urgency. During this search, we realized how quickly demand can surpass supply in RV storage. Like many others, we found ourselves in a desperate situation as summer approached, often a time when RV enthusiasts hit the road.

During this period, we learned that you may need to start your search before buying an RV, not after. This served as a wake-up call for prospective RV owners.

Expanding the Search Radius

After exhausting all local options, we expanded our search and found a storage unit in Easley, roughly 40 minutes from our home. The drive was realistic, given traffic conditions, making it over an hour in peak times. Although the unit had new amenities and a covered area offering some protection, the gravel lot left much to be desired. We didn't want to deter from our RV's maintenance or aesthetics.

Adding to the stress, the unit required a one-year contract upfront, something rarely seen in leasing agreements. However, we felt compelled to take it as no other choices were available.

A Stroke of Luck

Just when we thought we settled our RV storage issue, a fortunate turn of events occurred. Days after we secured the Easley lot, we got a call from a facility located only 10 minutes from our house. This new lot, although uncovered, offered enhanced security and was managed by a friendly owner who understood our predicament. We jumped at the chance and secured this lot too.

This experience revealed something crucial: having multiple storage options is always beneficial, as you may find better facilities when you aren’t in immediate need.

Evaluating Long-term Solutions

With two storage lots secured, we pondered our long-term options. We began asking ourselves critical questions: Should we sell our house and move to a non-HOA area? Should we purchase an empty lot and build a storage structure for the RV? Or should we invest in an RV lot at a resort?

After careful consideration, we started exploring the Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort in Cross Hill, South Carolina. This motorcoach-exclusive community lies by the scenic Lake Greenwood, offering a beautiful environment and community spirit. The best part is it’s only an hour from our house.

What intrigued us most was the pricing; unlike many other RV resorts where lots cost over $200,000, properties at this resort are under $100,000. This affordability made it a feasible option for us.

Making Informed Decisions

As we prepare to spend the weekend exploring Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort and its available properties, we understand the importance of making an informed decision. There are many factors to consider:

  1. Long-term Commitment: Should we opt for a resort lot where we can invest in a community? Alternatively, purchasing a private lot could offer flexibility in design and potential rental income.

  2. Community Involvement: A resort provides built-in social activities, but we must ensure it aligns with our lifestyle. Engaging in community events may enhance our RV experience.

  3. Financial Implications: Carefully analyzing the long-term financial commitment of each option will guide our decision. Selling our current house might be an ideal way to invest in RV storage without restrictions.

  4. Future Growth: As RV ownership continues to grow, so does the demand for storage. Investing in property now could ensure we have a place not just for our use, but for others who might seek similar solutions.

As we navigate these decisions, we’re excited about the prospects ahead and hope to find the best solution for our RV storage needs while considering our long-term goals.
