Recently, Tom and I decided to step out of our comfort zone and experience a different type of camping at Hartwell Lakeside KOA Holiday. We are giving this location 3 stars, which reflects our personal preference for resort-like campsites rather than the traditional outdoorsy experience. However, if you are an enthusiast of nature camping and watersports, this KOA might just be your ideal destination.
Located on the stunning Lake Hartwell in Hartwell, GA, this campground offers picturesque views and ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The lake itself is vast and truly beautiful, adding a serene backdrop to your camping adventure.
Below are our overall ratings for the 9 categories we rate.
1. Location: ★★☆☆☆
We are giving the location 2 stars because the KOA is situated in an inconvenient spot, requiring big rigs to navigate narrow country roads. Additionally, there isn't much to do outside the KOA, which is set in a residential area. The nearest store is approximately 20 minutes away, making a vehicle necessary for getting around.
2. Site Quality: ★★★☆☆
We are rating site quality three stars. We chose a back-in full hookup KOA patio deluxe site, which provided us with a two-tier patio. Although the sites are compact and close to each other, they do offer some privacy once the coach is parked. Our site included 50/30 AMP, sewer, and water hookups. It also featured a charcoal grill on the upper deck and a fire pit on the lower deck, along with a table and chairs for seating. While these extra features are nice, they were quite worn. In addition, the lot is made of packed gravel rather than concrete, which makes leveling a bit more difficult.
This location also offers other options like cabins, tent sites, and teepees, which are quite interesting to see up close.
3. Amenities: ★★★★☆
Amenities are rated four stars due to the wide range available at this location. If watersports are your passion, you will enjoy activities on Lake Hartwell. With stunning water all around, you have countless options to boat, jet ski, kayak, and more. Additionally, the site includes a playground, jump pad, dog park, comfort stations, laundry facilities, a volleyball court, and hiking trails.
4. Cleanliness: ★★★☆☆
The cleanliness deserves three stars, with the buildings being well-maintained and nicely decorated. However, you may notice some areas of the property appearing dated or weathered. The grounds are free of trash and kept clean, but being in the woods and exposed to the elements causes materials like wood to look weathered.
5. Staff & Service: ★★★★☆
Our interaction with the staff was minimal, but they were very accommodating when we arrived after hours. They gave us the site location and gate codes, allowing us to access our site without any trouble. Moreover, they provided a number to text if we needed anything during our stay, adding an extra layer of convenience and assurance.
6. Wi-Fi/Connectivity: ★★★★☆
Wi-Fi connectivity received a four-star rating at this location. We depended greatly on the campground's Wi-Fi because of issues with our personal device. The Wi-Fi was outstanding, allowing for streaming on multiple devices at once without any interruptions. This dependable connection was essential for our stay, providing a significant level of convenience.
7. Value For Money: ★★★★☆
The value for money at this KOA is truly remarkable, meriting a solid four-star rating. Depending on the type of site you choose, a nightly stay can cost between $27 and $71. This price range accommodates different budgets while including all amenities. Firewood is available for purchase at the front office for an additional fee, which is a small expense given the overall value offered. With such an all-encompassing package, the cost of staying at this KOA is well worth it.
8. Pet Friendly Environment: ★★★★☆
This location offers an outstanding pet-friendly environment, earning a strong four-star rating. There are many well-maintained grassy areas for pets to explore and play. The spacious dog park is a standout feature, providing a space for your furry companion to run freely and interact with other pets. We loved walking our dogs on the property's scenic and well-maintained trails, which offer a great chance for exercise and adventure. The focus on pet needs and the thoughtful amenities make it a wonderful destination for any pet owner.

9. Luxury: ★☆☆☆☆
This is not a luxury resort in any sense. It provides a traditional, old-fashioned camping experience that outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy. The accommodations are simple and practical, appealing more to those who appreciate the rustic allure of nature rather than upscale amenities. If you're looking for a lavish retreat with extravagant facilities, this might not be the right choice. However, for those who cherish simplicity and the classic essence of camping, this KOA offers a genuine and authentic outdoor experience.
In conclusion, if you're seeking a classic camping experience by a lake, this is indeed an excellent spot to visit. Nestled amidst the serene embrace of nature, this location offers breathtaking views of the water, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of wildlife. The lake itself is a picturesque gem, often reflecting the vibrant hues of the sky during sunrise and sunset, creating a perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection.
While we may not personally prefer traditional camping setups, we can certainly appreciate the lake's beauty and the tranquility that the great outdoors provides. The gentle lapping of the water against the shore, combined with the rustling of leaves in the breeze, creates an atmosphere that invites visitors to unwind and connect with nature. For those who enjoy fishing, swimming, or simply lounging by the water's edge, this location offers an array of activities to immerse oneself in the natural surroundings.
While we may lean towards more modern accommodations, such as unique glamping experiences that blend comfort with the outdoors, we recognize the charm and nostalgia that comes with traditional camping. The simplicity of a tent, a campfire under the stars, and the camaraderie of sharing stories with friends or family creates lasting memories.
As we continue to pursue our adventures through unique glamping experiences, we remain open to the allure of classic camping. Each experience contributes to our understanding and appreciation of the diverse ways one can enjoy the beauty of nature. The essence of adventure lies in the journey and the experiences we gather along the way.

Not what i expect on a koa. Staff friendly but are usually escorted to site. Poor sinage to dites and many trees make that'd fir big rigs. Appears to be converted city park. Laundry and bathrooms clean but not just barely. Lots of cob webs and leaves on walkway. Place us somewhat dated and news face-lift.
